Student Safety and Welfare
Playground - Supervision and Safety
The safety and wellbeing of Neutral Bay Public School students is of paramount
importance to us. We appreciate parents support in reinforcing with their children
the following measures and rules which are in place to ensure their safety.
- An area exclusively available for Kindergarten children is created in the Ben Boyd playground
by a red line which separates this area from the remaining playground.
- Students must not leave the school playground or enter buildings and classrooms
at any time without teacher permission and supervision.
- All fixed equipment in the playground is out of bounds before and after
school for safety reasons. The use of climbing equipment must always be supervised
by a teacher.
- Climbing trees is forbidden at all times.
- Parents supervising their children in the playground after school hours
are asked to cooperate by reinforcing these safety rules.
- Teachers are rostered on playground duty before school and during recess
and lunch times.
Before school supervision:
Parents are advised there is no teacher supervision of the playground prior
to 8.45am. A teacher supervises the playground between
8.45 - 9.10am. The Yeo St playground and Annexe (an area of land adjoining both
Ben Boyd Rd and Bydown St) are out of bounds before school.
In wet weather teachers supervise their own children
in classrooms from 9am.
Morning tea and lunch time supervision:
Supervision of the Yeo, Bydown, Ben Boyd playgrounds, grassed area known
as the Archer Field, and the Annexe is shared by teachers on a rostered basis.

Before School Arrangements
Parents are advised there is no teacher supervision of the playground prior
to 8.45am.
Parents who deliver their children to school prior to 8.45am are urged to enrol
them in Before School Care.
Children who are not enrolled in Before School Care
Children who arrive prior to 8.45am and are not enrolled in Before School Care
are required to stay quietly under or near the C.O.L.A. (covered area near the
assembly hall) until the 8.45am school bell. At this time supervision begins
and they may move into the playground to play.
Children enrolled in Before School Care
The care and supervision of these children is the responsibility of Creative
Activities Group personnel.
Before School Care commences at 7.45am and finishes at 9.00am. At 9.00am the
care and supervision of these children becomes the responsibility of the teacher
supervising the playground.
Prior to 7.45am there are no Creative Activities Group personnel or Neutral
Bay Public School staff in attendance. If children arrive prior to 7.45am parents
are required to accompany them into the school grounds and wait with them until
Creative Activities Group personnel come on duty.
Children must not be left unsupervised during these early hours in the school
playground.
Parents are asked to indicate whether or not children are enrolled in Before
School Care in a standard note at the beginning of each year and acknowledge
their understanding of these supervision arrangements.

After School Arrangements
Parents are advised there is no direct teacher supervision in the playground
from 3.15pm.
Parents are urged to enrol their child in After School Care if they do not
have an alternative form of supervision after school.
Children who are not enrolled in After School Care
These children are to be collected or leave the school grounds immediately
after classes are dismissed at 3.15pm. Parents are asked to be punctual in collecting
their children.
Parents who are delayed in collecting their children should phone the school
and ask that their child be taken to After School Care to be supervised until
they arrive.
In cases where parents do not personally collect their children from school
it is their responsibility to arrange for an alternative form of supervision
appropriate to the child's level of maturity to ensure safe travel home.
Children enrolled in After School Care
The care and supervision of these children is the responsibility of After School
Care personnel. These children should go straight from their classroom to the
Bydown Hall where the roll for After School Care is called.
Kindergarten children attending After School Care will be met at the climbing
equipment at class dismissal time by After School Care staff and accompanied
to the Bydown Hall.
Children are not permitted on the school premises for any purpose
after school hours unless they have the permission of the principal and are
supervised by an adult.
Kindergarten early dismissal Term One
Kindergarten children are dismissed at 2.45pm for the first four weeks of Term One only. Children may
only leave the school grounds at 2.45pm if accompanied by a parent or other
responsible adult.
Children who are not catching buses
These children exit the school from gates at the southern ends of the Bydown
and Ben Boyd buildings.
Children who are catching buses
These children wait in bus lines on the western side of the Hall (or under the COLA if raining). They are
supervised by executive teachers who ensure they board safely.
If children miss buses they should report immediately to the teacher on bus
duty or the deputy principal or principal who will contact parents.

Sun Safety
The importance of ensuring students are aware of sun safety is recognised and
children are actively encouraged and reinforced in the wearing of hats and sunscreen.
Hats are an essential component of our school uniform. Children are regularly
reminded before sport and play to put on hats and apply sunscreen. The school's
policy is "No hat no play". Children without
hats on the playground will be sent to the COLA.

Traffic and Safety
Please observe the following measures which exist to ensure your child's safety:
- the school is a wheel free zone from 7.45am-6.00pm - no cars, bikes, roller

- 5 minute parking bays on Bydown St between 8.30 - 9.30am and 3.00-4.00pm
on school days
It is recommended that drivers use Bydown St to deliver and collect children.
Our school is surrounded by very busy roads, it is critical for your child's
safety that: CHILDREN USE THE DESIGNATED CROSSINGS
- pedestrian lights at cnr Ben Boyd Rd and Yeo St
- pedestrian lights at cnr Yeo St and Wycombe Rd
- children's crossing at Bydown St
- pedestrian crossing at Lindsay St
- traffic lights and crossings on Military Rd
Parents Observe Parking Regulations - Do Not:
- park in no stopping, no parking or no standing zones. Associated fines are
high
- double park
- park in bus bays
- park on the other side of the street and call your child across to you
Unsafe parking habits greatly increase the risk of your child or another being
hit by a car. PLEASE SET A GOOD EXAMPLE. Your child and others copy what you do.
